SCSI has also been moving from the legacy parallel SCSI to other serialized forms of SCSI with SAS storage in the forefront. Virtualization software like VMware and others now have a new entry from Microsoft with the introduction of HyperV into their Server 2008 operating system. Its a free addition made for use in Server 2008. This is similar to what Microsoft did with iSCSI by providing a free download of their version of iSCSI initiator for all current versions of their operating systems. The bottom line is that Microsoft sees the need for virtualization as a selling point when decisions are being made as to what operating system an organization wishes to standardize on.

A problem has been introduced with Server 2008. A number organizations that have upgraded to it have run into problems using their current SCSI backup parallel storage with it. Some of these organizations have gone to iS5xx series iSCSI bridges as an inexpensive way to move their backup storage to the Windows 2008 Server operating system.  A fantastic feature in Server 2008 has the ability for multiple servers on a storage network to use the same backup storage with a somewhat new mode page (83H) feature to help control the communications. The Windows 2008 server, and the latest versions of Solaris and Linux(2.6.29 and higher) all have support for this feature.  Without becoming technical on the matter, what this means is that backup storage on a SAN has become an integral part of the virtualization framework.
